Honors Course: Honors General College Biology II
Instructor: Khursheed Icchaporia
My name is Katrine Zhadovich, I am a registered nurse and am attending Oakton College to complete requirements for entry into medical school. The reason I chose the topic of genetic risk factors for autoimmune diseases is because over the past few years as a nurse I have seen many patients with the diseases discussed in the paper. I have seen the toll the diseases take on patient’s health, and how little information physicians have on the cause of it. My curiosity has driven me to learn what I can about the topic so that I can better understand the autoimmune diseases that come up in clinic patients. It is this curiosity and desire to have a deep understanding of diseases and disease processes that has pushed me to set on the track of transitioning from a registered nurse to a medical student.
Working with Dr. Ichhaporia on the honors contract project for the Bio 122 course was a very rewarding experience. She guided me through various steps of the project, providing invaluable insights and feedback while also giving me the freedom to select a topic and dive deep into what interests me. Dr. Ichhaporia encouraged me to explore innovative research methodologies and supported my efforts to investigate genetic risk factors in select autoimmune diseases. Her mentorship not only enhanced my understanding of the subject matter but also honed my critical thinking and independent research skills. This experience was instrumental in shaping my academic and professional aspirations, reinforcing my passion for medicine.
