September 24, 2:00PM-3:30PM (Zoom): Religious Studies Speaker Series: Jonathan H.X. Lee
Jonathan H. X. Lee, Ph.D., is a Professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University. His family survived the Cambodian genocide and arrived to the United States in 1981 when he was 5 years old. He identifies as Chinese-Vietnamese-Cambodian American. He received his doctorate in Religious Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2009. He has published 16 books, and numerous articles and essays on Asian American histories, the intersectionality of LGBTQQIA+ Asian Americans, religion and race, folklore, and cultures. Since 2013 he has served as editor-in-chief of Chinese America: History & Perspectives, a peer-reviewed journal published by the Chinese Historical Society of America. He is dedicated to anti-racist pedagogy in higher education and has been invited by several Silicon Valley corporations and public agencies to speak on equity, inclusion, diversity, and belonging issues as well as training on LGBTQQIA+ gender and sexual identities. He and his husband are the fathers of two adopted sons.
Dr. Lee will speak on Buddhist death rituals and religious syncretism in Chinese Popular Religions (check back for title and description). The Religious Studies Speaker Series is made possible by a grant from the Oakton Educational Foundation. Register here to attend via Zoom.

October 16, 2:00PM-3:00PM: Honors Workshop (Zoom) — Academic Success Skills for Oakton and Beyond
Join this workshop for an informal discussion with Professor Townsend about Academic Success Skills for Oakton and Beyond. Professor Townsend (the Honors Coordinator) is a first-generation college student, a past community college student, and a successful transfer student, who worked full time while going to school full time throughout his education. He will share some ‘pro-tips’ for academic success from his past perspectives as a student, and also now as a professor. Please register in advance here to join via Zoom.
October 22, 2:00PM-3:30PM (Hybrid): Honors “Emerging Scholars Series”: Brett Palmero and Annie Gomez
Join us for the Honors Program’s “Emerging Scholars” Series, a discussion with Brett Palmero and Annie Gomez. Brett is a PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences program at Northwestern University. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Lake Forest College. He is researching assembly and encapsulation properties of the 1,2-propanediol utilization bacterial microcompartment. Annie is a PhD student in the Materials Science department at Northwestern. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Latin American Studies from Wellesley College. Her research focuses on optimizing enzymatic pathways in bacterial microcompartments for metabolic engineering applications. In line with the Honors Program’s “Emerging Scholars” Series, Brett and Annie will discuss both their research, and their educational paths. Please register in advance to attend via Zoom here. Dr. Susan P. Bratton is a Professor Emerita of Environmental Science at Baylor University and was Chair of the Environmental Sciences department at Baylor from 2001 to 2011. She has the unique background of holding dual Ph.D. degrees in both Arts and Humanities (University of Texas at Dallas) and Botany and Plant Ecology (Cornell). She has authored 6 books, 2 laboratory manuals, 48 full-length and 10 short book chapters, and over 100 refereed articles and reports. Her most recent book is Religion & Environment: An Introduction (Routledge 2021, the first chapter can be read here) and she is currently lead editor of The Handbook of Religion and the Environment (forthcoming from Edward Elgar Publishing in 2025). Dr. Bratton will speak on "From Salmon Conservation to Plastic Trash: Religion and the Environmental Ethics of Watershed Protection". November 13, 7:00PM-8:30PM: Personal Statement Workshop with Northwestern University (Zoom)
Do you plan on transferring to a 4-year college or university? Most 4-year institutions require you to submit one or more essays (also called personal statements) about what makes you who you are. In this workshop, you will learn from a Writing Tutor at Oakton’s Learning Center about what the personal statement is and why it’s important for transferring to your next college, review essay prompts appearing on the Common Application or Coalition Application, and; hear from Oakton alum, Northwestern graduate and Alumni Relations staff member Nathaniel Hall; and hear from Oakton’s first student to transfer to Northwestern University’s under Oakton’s new transfer agreement, Victor Leca. They will share sample essays, talk about their experiences transferring and writing their transfer essays and provide advice to help you. Join us for a poetry reading and discussion with Native American (Anishinaabe) writer, photographer, and scholar Kimberly Blaeser. Kimberly was 2015-2016 Wisconsin Poet Laureate and is founding director of Indigenous Nations Poets. She is the author of six poetry collections, most recently Ancient Light (2024), Résister en dansant/Ikwe-niimi: Dancing Resistance (2020), and Copper Yearning (2019). Her poetry is widely anthologized and her photographs, picto-poems, and ekphrastic pieces have appeared in exhibits such as “Visualizing Sovereignty,” and “No More Stolen Sisters.” An Anishinaabe activist and environmentalist, she is an enrolled member of White Earth Nation and grew up on the reservation. The 2024 Mackey Chair in Creative Writing at Beloit College, Blaeser is a Professor Emerita at UW–Milwaukee and an MFA faculty member for Institute of American Indian Arts. Join us for the Honors Program’s “Emerging Scholars” Series, a discussion with Laura Hertz. Laura is a PhD candidate in Northwestern University's Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences graduate program. Prior to arriving in Chicago, she conducted molecular biology research at a government lab for two years and extensively explored STEM career options. She's passionate not only about her chosen scientific field but also engaging with her community as a scientist to bridge the gap between technology and society. Research-wise, she has extensive experience and knowledge about RNA biology through several fields: cancer, virus, development, biophysics, and synthetic biology. Join us for the Honors Program’s “Emerging Scholars” Series, a discussion with Oakton Alumnus Fabian Halblander on “Emphasizing Human Health, Collaboration, and Interdisciplinary Knowledge in Biology and STEM”. Fabian is a PhD Candidate at the University of Chicago, in the Human Genetics Program. He is happy to have joined a program where he feels encouraged to follow his scientific interests in gene regulation and Epigenetics, and where his own personal interests in philosophy, social science, and media theory are more relevant. He is passionate about institutional and scientific reform, believing that interdisciplinary collaboration and an emphasis on social organization results in more nuanced, innovative, and expansive science. Abdul-Rehman Malik (who will be also appearing at Creating Justice as part of the Listening While Muslim panel) is currently a Lecturer at the Yale Divinity School, a journalist, and an organizer. He is the Director of the Muslim Leadership Lab, a student leadership program at Yale University. Join us for a discussion with Abdul-Rehman about his work and his academic path and experiences. April 30, 2:00PM-3:30PM, Yashica Dutt, Coming Out as Dalit book Discussion (in-person, DP Student Center)
Yashica Dutt is a leading anti-caste expert, journalist, and award-winning author. Coming Out as Dalit, Dutt’s first book, has been lauded both critically, by readers. A memoir that presents a scathing and intimate account of how the caste system brutally affects Dalits in today’s India, Coming Out as Dalit is currently being taught at several universities across the United States. Yashica Dutt is an emerging figure recognized for highlighting Dalit rights globally and her voice has been instrumental in understanding the realities of caste within the increasingly prominent Indian diaspora. Dutt’s work seeks to expose caste as ‘the invisible arm that turns the gears in nearly every system in India', and highlights why this issue needs urgent attention. Her work has been published in the New York Times, Foreign Policy and The Atlantic and Dutt has been featured on The BBC, The Guardian and PBS Newshour. Dutt graduated from Columbia Journalism School and lives in New York. Join us for a discussion with Yashica about Coming Out as Dalit. May 1, 2:00-3:00PM (in-person DP2205 and Zoom): Richard Kim — Honors Student Independent Study Presentation/Philosophy Colloquium: “Is Psychophysical Harmony a Problem for Naturalism?”
Oakton Honors Student Richard Kim will present work from his Honors Independent Study course, in fulfillment of the Honors Scholar Designation. The topic is theistic and naturalistic explanations of "psychophysical harmony"; roughly, the fact that experiences of pain and pleasure give us reasons to act in certain ways. Join us for the Honors Program’s “Emerging Scholars” Series, a discussion with Oakton Honors Program alumna Noor Shahzad. Noor serves as a Community Outreach Associate for the Midwest, EPA Region 5, with the Environmental Protection Network. In her role, she actively forges and strengthens ties among communities of color, low-income communities, EPA alumni, and other key stakeholders. She is currently enrolled in a Masters in Public Policy program at the University of Chicago. In line with the Honors Program’s “Emerging Scholars” Series, Noor will discuss both her research and work, and her academic path and experiences as a graduate student.
