Honors Project: Unethical Medicine: Human Experimentation During the Holocaust

Honors Course: Honors Introduction to Life Science

Instructor: Stephanie Levi-Blumer

My name is Jacob Engel, and I am graduating from Oakton in the spring of 2024, with an Associate in Arts in the business track. I am transferring to Lake Forest College, and will be studying Business and Psychology. I would like to thank my amazing honors professors for helping me complete the Honors Scholar Designation. As a first generation college student, I am grateful for all the support I have received throughout my time at Oakton. Oakton Honors was a blast!

This research paper is one that demonstrates the conjunction of life sciences and history. In this paper I write about unethical experimentation on concentration camp prisoners during the Holocaust. These experiments are infamous for being conducted without regard for moral integrity, which produced results that can no longer be recreated due to ethical standards. Because of these novel results, some researchers have controversially cited these studies, despite outcry from many scientists and ethicists. I write about three experiments performed, the underlying biological processes that are experimented on, and finally summarize these experiments based on how reliable the results are.
