Updates on the Honors Student Organization

The Honors Program at Oakton is a faculty-led academic program—the Honors Student Organization is a STUDENT-LED CLUB. Prof. Kristin McCartney is the faculty advisor, and she helps coordinate the activities of the club to help students participate in the Honors Program. But HSO is much more!

HSO is unique, because student members have interests that range from accounting to filmmaking and backgrounds that range from being a dual-credit student to returning to Oakton after retirement. What they share in common is a love for learning and the desire to community as they pursue their biggest educational dreams.

The first Fall 2021 meeting of interested students prioritized mutual support as the 1st aim as an organization. This would include sharing their weekly successes and struggles, practical support as they prepare things like scholarship applications, and organizing space for working together on larger projects. Their 2nd aim was to invite guest speakers, such as past Honors students and current graduate students, to learn more about the highs and lows of life after Oakton at selective colleges and programs. Finally, students would like to organize an events to share their research and to socialize here at Oakton and within larger regional Honors student groups.

No officers have been decided for the club yet. An invitation for students to volunteer/apply will be sent after the Sept 22 Virtual Fall Fest Meeting. The tentative plan will be to meet Tuesdays from 4-5pm, but this scheduling will likely change once all of the members have had the chance to weigh in.
