Honors Course: Religious Diversity in America

Instructor: Charles Townsend

My name is Ololade Shittu and I will be receiving my Associate of Arts from Oakton in Summer 2023 and then transferring to Elmhurst University in the Fall of 2023 to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, after which I intend to go to Medical school to fulfill my long term goal of becoming a Pediatric Oncologist. As an international student, I have had a somewhat difficult time navigating the intricacies of the educational system in the U.S., but being a member of the Honors Program has provided me with opportunities to take a path forward towards my goal while focusing on the things I love the most.

In my Honors Religious Diversity in America Class working with Professor Charles Townsend, I completed a profile of a religious community focusing on The Apostolic Church Glorious Vision, an “African initiated church”. Through in-person visits, interviews, and research, I explored the church's history, demographics, organization, religious and cultural practices, and its emphasis on integrating African culture with Christian beliefs. The paper also addressed the challenges faced by the community and its future prospects. This profile offers insights into “African initiated churches” as responses to colonialism, highlighting the unique aspects of The Apostolic Church Glorious Vision, including its predominantly Nigerian immigrant population and the establishment of its Elgin branch. By examining the community's beliefs, departments, and ministries, the paper provides a holistic understanding of this vibrant religious community.
