Students will be introduced to the cultural systems of various human groups and explore their diversity within specific historical contexts. We will analyze topics of identity formation, kinship, religion and ritual, ethnicity, globalization and indigeneity, with an emphasis on cultural constructions of gender/sex/sexuality systems. Using ethnographic essays, documentary film, and group projects on contemporary global issues, students will be encouraged to apply an anthropological lens to better understand the challenges, and opportunities, of our rapidly globalizing world. This course is structured in an engaging seminar format; each class session will be primarily discussion-based, as students will help shape the learning trajectory of the course.  At the end of the semester, students will be able to apply the knowledge they've gained throughout the course by creating a unique project that addresses a contemporary global issue and sharing it with the class.
